Inman High School Winter Formal Saturday December 13th, 2008

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

I arrived right about 7 to set up and the building was dark.  This was unusual for Inman High School, it seems like the school never locks up with all the Sports and Activities going on.  A couple minutes later the doors open and I start loading in equipment.  On one of the trips in I held the door open for a couple people, they were taking in sugar cookies.  I met Lori from the Booster Club and she told me to be sure to get one before they were all gone.  She said they pay the lady to make them because they are so good.  As I entered the commons area I saw the decorations, snowflakes and Christmas lights creating the atmosphere of winter time.  I completed setup and started a few Christmas songs as the kids started arriving, they waited until straight up 8 o’clock to enter into the dance area.

Will try to get the rest of this up on Monday including Pictures.

HMS8 Middle School Dance Sponsored by Communities That Care/Thursday November 6th, 2008

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

I arrived excited for another Middle School Dance.  I had contacted Rick Caywood “dB Extreme DJ Service”, he is hosting/entertaining for the HMS7 (seventh) and I am hosting/entertaining for the HMS8 (eighth).  For at least the last 3 years Rick and I have entertained for all the Hutch Middle School dances and we end up back and forth between the 7th and 8th.  This works out great to give the kids a different experience each time although we constently change our routines for almost every dance that we do.
The CTC (Communities That Care Foundation) sponsored the dance and activities for tonight.  This included numerous stations around the commons area to teach the eight graders about the effects of the use of Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco.  One of the neatest stations had goggles that you put on and then try to walk a straight line.  The goggles were designed to make your vision blurry causing you to not be able to walk straight.  It was a weird experience.  There were slides of a healthy lung compared to a normal lung along with a breathing appartus that showed the decreased air flow due to smoking.  Various other stations really helped to educated the eight graders on the effects of these drugs.  The coolest thing was the prizes.  The CTC provided some great prizes for the kids, participation was the key.  If they participated in a station they received one chance at a prize.  With 8 stations they had up to 8 chances to win.
As I got ready to start playing music for the dance, my computer crashed.  I let the sponsors know that it would be 15 minutes before I would be up and running.  Travis Kershner from “Mystic DJ Services” brought up his laptop for me to use for the night.  The 15 minutes of dead air actually proved useful at the beginning of the night.  I announced about the different stations and without the music playing they were able to communicate with the kids without having to shout.  Alot of drawing entries were earned during this time.  Travis arrived with his laptop and helped save the dance.  I had just taken out my cd player (backup device)  as I had just purchased a new lap top for backup but had not yet installed programs or music onto it yet.  It is great to have professional colleges that share equipment in times of needs.
I started pumping out the hits and the kids lined up for various dances in the commons area.  The basketball challenge was a great hit.  Inbetween request we had a series of trivia questions relating to teens with tobacco, alcohol use.  $10 gift cards were given to the kids with the correct answers from such places as Hastings, Sonic, McDonalds, Burger King etc.  There were so many activities that the night went by pretty quick.
It was time for the 1st drawing, Kaley Bohlen & Maggie Robinson both won $50 iTune Gift Cards, next was the Audiovox DVD Player. ”You are not going to believe this” I said as I read off the name of the winner of the DVD Player, “Maggie Robinson”.  The kids went wild.  I threw in the comment that it does pay to participate and learn.  Next  up was the Samsung Digital Camera, it went to Savannah Engel.  The top prize was an 8 gig iPod Nano, this went to Daijah.
Towards the end of the dance we closed down the different stations.  The CTC kids got about 15 minutes to enjoy the dance as well (in the blue shirts).  I thanked the kids for coming out and the CTC for sponsoring the evening.  With the numerous CTC kids cleaning up, it didn’t take long, except for the two that hoola hooped for about 10 minutes.  They had a great time while inspiring the 8th graders to respect their bodies.  The names of the kids from Communities That Care Youth Leadership  whom ran the different stations to teach about the effects of drugs, tobacco and alcohol included: Ryan O’Keif, Caleb Gimar, Lacy Dimitt, Megan Ellegood, Caley Regier, Casey Tiechman, Cheyenne Bloom, Carissa Meyer, Hannah Saylor, Brittany Lanham, Brooke Lanham, Ayrn Taylor, Ursela Hemman.

Haven High School Homecoming Dance/Friday September 19th, 2008

Friday, October 31st, 2008

It was a dark night and when I arrived I found one of my headlights burnt out.  The football game was at 1/2 time and there was excitement in the air as I walked around to find my contact.  I met with Vicki Koontz and she let me into the commons and I visualized how and where to set up the audio and lighting.  I was set up with plenty of time and looked at the decorations, they had pictures of the homecoming nominees on the wall.  I was excited as the first students started coming in.  The music request were all over the map from Joan Jett/Def Leppard to Toni Basil/Abba//The Grease Megamix to Flo-rida & Yung Joc!  Beth was on fire as she won the bball contest 15-4 against Kyle.  I am awaiting approved pictures from the school photographer to post.  The Homecoming King Philipi (their foreign exchange student) and the Homecoming Queen Becca danced to Amazed by Lonestar and the other couples joined them half way through the dance.  Amanda led the 80ish person train around and the cha-cha slide left no room at all to walk around.  There were so many great request but we ran out of time as Second Hand Seranade played as the last song for the evening.   Emily, my student council contact thanked me afterwards and I thanked her for the opportunity.  The smaller town High School dances always blow me away with their variety of music request, their respect towards each other and the fun they have.  I packed up, headed home and replaced my headlight when I arrived back in town.

Newton Recreation Halloween Dance, Friday October 24th, 2008

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Life is always so rushed.  I think about this as I juggle family life, my day job and my Entertainment Business(DJ Impressions, LLC).  The trick I learned from a great friend Bryan Dodge is that time at home or time at work is not about quantity, but instead about the quality time focussed on where you are at and what you are doing.  Be in the moment.  I just got off work @ 6 pm, head home to change and hook up the trailer to the truck.  I grab a hot pocket on the way out the door and head to Newton.  A couple deep breaths to relax and to take a step back to focus on the event that lay ahead.  Tonight is a Halloween Dance Party for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders in Newton.  I just finish setting up and started playing the theme from “Halloween” as the kids in costumes enter.  Alot of great costumes came through the door, it was going to be a fun evening.

Music was a blast with all the different request made and played.  The hoola hoop contest was a hit, although it was hard to elimate these hoop masters until they had to clap their hands above their head and stand on one foot, all while hoola hooping.  Tyler was eager to help with a game so we played the paper plate game to the song “Ghostbusters”, (it was a new twist on an old game/this is all the details I can give on this game, it was hauntingly fun!)  We held the dance off with a new twist also.  The kids were seated in a circle around the center circle on the basketball court.  If they wanted to enter the contest they only had to raise their hands and I would run around the cirle an tap them in.  Once they entered the “Circle of Dance” the previous dancer would join the circle.  With the kids seated, everyone was able to see the dancers(including the staff) and made this dance off all the more enjoyable.  We then took the top three dancers into the final round and the kids voted when my hand was waved over their heads.  Manual Garcia was the Dance Winner(picture of Darren Goertz/DJ Impressions, LLC & Manual Garcia below).  We then had all the middle school kids in costumes line up so we could pick the winners.  Audrey from the Newton Rec helped to pick the winners.  The 3 catagories were scariest, funniest and most original.  Check out the winners.  The costume train was led by Haven and the best dance was yet to come.  It is called the “Monster Line Dance”.  Four volunteers were picked and numbered off.  Each of them showed a signature monster dance move.  I started the song “Thriller” and called out numbers for the volunteers.  The rest of the dance floor mimicked their movements and a brand new line dance was formed.  I have partial video of this.  I joined in and found it fun, entertaining and enjoyable.
